What is a hygiene appointment?

A hygiene appointment is when you have your teeth and/or gums cleaned by a dentist or hygienist. This is to remove the build up of plaque and tartar.

Hygiene appointments can include:

Full clean (commonly known as a scale and polish, or cosmetic clean) – this helps clean the teeth surfaces and also helps remove staining.

Advanced gum treatment – (also known as periodontal treatment) We have done a whole article dedicated to this treatment which you can find here: https://www.sandygatedental.co.uk/dental-insight/sheffield-dentist-perio/

Oral hygiene education tailored to you. We assess your understanding of your oral health and general oral hygiene knowledge, so that we are sharing the most helpful information with you.

Take home techniques to support your oral hygiene routine. We are dedicated to your well-being. We often send patients home with personal recommendations for inter-dental cleaning, and general oral hygiene advice.

Why is this treatment recommended by Our Dentists in Sheffield?

To keep on top of your oral health, and prevent problems such as decay and gum disease down the line, we recommend regular hygiene appointments. Plaque and tartar build-up contributes to dental decay. We believe in preventative dentistry and our dentists in Sheffield encourage regular attendance to improve and maintain your oral health.

A hygiene appointment helps to clean those hard to reach areas that you may struggle to clean effectively at home. Plaque bacteria can accumulate and form hard mineral deposits called calculus or tartar which cannot be removed by brushing alone. Plaque can continue to build up and potentially under the gum line, leading to gum disease. To reduce the risks of gum disease, and to help the deterioration of existing gum disease, we recommend a regular clean with our dentists in Sheffield.

We first remove the deposits of plaque and tartar. We then polish the teeth to make the surface smooth. The polishing helps to remove stains but also helps prevent plaque build up by removing the rough surfaces.

Our patients are given tailored oral health advice and as such, we recommend varying intervals for your regular hygiene appointments. We also have Membership Plans that include your routine dental examinations and cleans. You can find out more information about our Membership Plans here:
